The alveolar sac is a small chamber of pulmonary tissue located at the end of the alveolar duct from which smaller sacs, called alveoli, project. Air travels from the bronchioles, into the alveolar duct, into the alveolar sac, where it is then distributed to many alveoli projecting from that alveolar sac.

The Trachea (windpipe) leads from the mouth and nose and splits into the Bronchi which in turn split into the Bronchioles which lead to the Alveoli (air sacs) where gaseous exchange occurs. These form a pair of inflatable structures , the Lungs , supported by the ribs and the Diaphragm which allow the animal to Inspire and Expire .

6. Bronchi. The lower end of the trachea splits the respiratory tract into two branches that are named the primary bronchi. These first run into each of the lungs before further branching off into smaller bronchi. These secondary bronchi continue carrying the air to the lobes of the lungs, then further split into tertiary bronchi.

After a bifurcation, each primary bronchus enters a lung. Additionally, because the right lung has three lobes rather than two, it has one more bifurcation than the left. The bronchi function to carry air that is breathed in through to the functional tissues of the lungs, called alveoli.Exchange of gases between the air in the lungs and the blood in the capillaries occurs across the walls of the alveolar ducts and alveoli.
